Best time to walk or bike El Camino? About the Weather on the Camino!

It’s possible to walk The Camino the whole year, but there are big differences between the different seasons and the different Caminos.

The climate in northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago is a mix of oceanic, Mediterranean, and mountain climates. This means that each season offers a different experience, not only due to weather conditions but also because of the number of pilgrims on the route.

But beyond the weather, there are other personal factors you should consider when deciding the best time to walk the Camino:

  • Is the weather your top priority?

  • Does it depend on when you can take time off?

  • Do you want to meet other pilgrims and share the experience?

  • Or do you prefer walking in solitude, in peace and without crowds?

Every pilgrim has their own motivations and expectations. That’s why there is no single “best” time for everyone—only the time that best suits your personal preferences.

Based on the climate data in our article Weather on the Camino, which includes temperatures and rainfall by route and city, we provide you with an overview of when might be the best time to walk the Camino, depending on the season and the type of route.

General recommendations by season

Best months depending on your travel style

  • May, June, and September usually offer stable weather, pleasant temperatures, and a perfect balance between activity and tranquility.
  • April and October are great for those who want to avoid the crowds, although there's a slightly higher chance of rain.
  • July and August can be very hot (especially on the Meseta), but they are also the liveliest months on the Camino. It's essential to start walking early and book your accommodation in advance.
  • From November to February are the coldest and wettest months. Routes like the Portuguese or the English Camino are good options if you’re well-prepared.

Final tips

  • Check the weather forecast before setting off — the climate in northern Spain can change quickly.
  • Choose the route that best fits your interests and the time of year. There’s no single way to experience the Camino. [Which Camino to choose]
